Papers, 1899-1907, 1920-1952.

Reminiscences (12 leaves) by Mr. Steele document his involvement in the death of Sitting Bull, and a summary of his early life. The correspondence between 1899 and 1907, primarily to his mother living at Avondale, Alabama, describes in very good detail his daily activities beginning with the formation of the 30th Volunteer Infantry at Fort Sheridan, Ill., the voyage to the Philippines, actions against the rebels, and his running the city of Lucban. The correspondence from 1903 through 1907 was written while he was an instructor at the United States Army Command and Staff College at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas and on a trip to Europe. The diaries describe his daily activities as a Fargo businessman although they are not very complete nor detailed.
